The Viacom, parents company of Nickelodeon claimed YouTube and Google, as their owners in copyright infringement over SpongeBob, the famous cartoon SquarePants character. Last week Viacom, Nickelodeon's parent company, launched a $1.25 billion lawsuit against YouTube for copyright infringement over SpongeBob and its other properties, which include popular programs such as The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and South Park.
SpongeBob SquarePants lives in a pineapple under the sea. His adventures cartoon series are those of the most popular not only around kids and teens, buy also for adults.
YouTube is a popular video-sharing site, which contains a huge clips archive, that people can publish on it. The company itself is owned by Google, so in fact the lawsuit was started agains search corporation.
Viacom sais, that clips with SpongeBob and other tv shows, owned by Nickelodeon were watched on YouTube 1.5 billion times so that determines the lawsuit charge.
Now Viacom and Google are in discussion- how much Google should pay and how they could stop posting copyrighted media. It would be better for both companies if they would settle before the case reaches court and armies of lawyers will help them spend quite a few millions dollars
